OTC analgesics widely used during pregnancy
An analysis of two US databases has revealed that most women take an OTC
analgesic during pregnancy and that one in six take ibuprofen (Am J Obstet
Gynecol 2005;1293:771-7). In one cohort of 7,563 mothers, 65 percent of
women reported taking paracetamol and 18 percent took ibuprofen. In a
second group of 2,970 mothers, use of paracetamol was higher during pregnancy
than before. While there is no suggestion that this increased risks to
the foetus, the authors say that more research is needed.
