Ibuprofen look-alike in olive oil?
US researchers have identified a natural ingredient of olive oil with
pharmacology apparently identical to that of ibuprofen (Nature 2005;437:45-6).
Oleocanthol is obtained from newly pressed extra virgin olive oil. Its
potential was spotted by chemist Gary Beauchamp while on an olive oil
and wine tasting holiday. He noted that some oils produced a strong stinging
sensation in the throat that was similar to that produced by ibuprofen.
Back in the lab, he showed that oleocanthol inhibits cyclo-oxygenase and
its potency and profile is similar to that of ibuprofen. Could this help
to explain the benefits of the Mediterranean diet?
