It has been suggested that paracetamol may reduce antioxidant capacity in the lung by reducing levels of glutathione, and observational studies have linked paracetamol with an increased risk of asthma in adults and children.<br> <br> This theory has been tested using the US Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NANES III). Of the 13,492 participants, 6.9 percent said they had asthma, 11.8 percent said they COPD and 2.8 percent reported having both conditions. Increasing use of paracetamol (ranging from 1 - 5 tablets per month to one or more tablets daily) was associated with a significantly increased risk of both asthma (odds ratio 1.20, CI95% 1.12 - 1.28) and COPD (odds ratio 1.16, CI95% 1.09 - 1.24). This was supported by evidence of diminished lung function (as measured by forced expiratory volume in one second and forced vital capacity) among those using paracetamol at least daily.<br> <br> By contrast, neither ibuprofen nor aspirin were significantly associated with asthma or COPD at any level of consumption.
