Scots
approve ibuprofen for PDA Ibuprofen injection has been approved for the treatment of severe patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) within NHS Scotland. The Scottish Medicines Consortium (www.scottishmedicines.org.uk), which advises NHS boards in Scotland on the cost effectiveness of all new medicines, considered intravenous ibuprofen injection 5 mg/ml (Pedea) in February. It approved the preparation for the treatment of 'haemodynamically significant PDA in preterm newborn infants of less than 34 weeks' gestational age', adding that 'safety and efficacy compared to existing alternative treatments has not been formally assessed'. Ibuprofen has been compared with indomethacin, the standard treatment for PDA, in clinical trials (see www.ibuprofen-foundation.com/news/conferences/arteriosis.pdf).
