from McNeil is the leading ibuprofen brand in Scandinavia Nurofen - UK Nurofen - Australia What is the difference between over-the-counter ibuprofen and prescribed NSAIDs? In general, NSAIDs that are available only on prescription are used in the long-term treatment of chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and they are associated with a higher risk of adverse effects. Ibuprofen has been available in the UK for 40 years. It is associated with the lowest risk of adverse gastrointestinal effects of any NSAID; the maximum dose when it is used as a prescribed medicine is 2,400 mg/day. Ibuprofen has been available over-the-counter (OTC) since 1983. As an OTC medicine it is not used in the same way as prescription-only NSAIDs: the maximum dose is lower (1200 mg/day) and it is used only for short-term treatment (usually taken to mean no longer than 7 days). As a result, its side effect profile is very different from that associated with prescription-only NSAIDs used for long-term treatment.
